Tom Williams (John Ritter) is a rising executive at Dexel Industries in the midwest. After devoting all his energies to climbing the corporate ladder he decides to devote his time to his family. He takes his wife and children on a long-awaited vacation to sunny California. Tom and his beautiful wife Gina (Rachel Hunter) also need to spend some time on their relationship.

Mr Eddie (Eric Roberts) is the last in a long line of white trash criminals lured to the west coast by the promise of easy marks. He's just getting out of prison and eager to work on his third strike. He joins up with two of his old crime partners: Franklin (Michael Raynor), an ex-hitman, and Lonnie (Katy Boyer),he first girl on her block to use roofies on traveling salesmen.

To get back in the swing of things Eddie leads the trio on a viscous home invasion robbery not far from where Tom and his family are vacationing. Things get out of control and Eddie happily orders the killing of his victims - a family much like the Williams.

Not satisfied with their meager haul, Eddie turns his sights on Tom and his family. Eddie and Franklin ingratiate themselves to wary Tom, taking him to a strip bar where they try to get him to sit still for a lap dance. Meanwhile Lonnie takes Gina shopping to separate her from Tom.

With their guard down, Tom and his family are suddenly kidnapped by Eddie and his gang. Eddie offers to let the family go for a price -Tom must pay him $1.2 million, everything he has, Tom agrees.

But getting hold of $1.2 million is easier said than done. Tom must have the money wired in from out-of-state while Lonnie holds his family hostage. But it soon becomes clear that the sadistic Mr. Eddie has no intentions of turning the Williams family loose. As much as Mr. Eddie wants the money, killing is the icing on the cake for him.

The bank transfer will take one day, giving Tom a window of opportunity to act. But years in business college and soft living in the suburbs haven't prepared Tom for this. Unable to ask for help, with Mr. Eddie and Franklin constantly at his side, Tom must summon up every ounce of moral and physical courage to save his family from certain death.
